“Fucking hell. Um. I’m just on my way home, having left Marc Almond’s fiftieth birthday party. He’s fucking great. It is rare enough that you leave a gig feeling tingly; it is ludicrous that I’m still feeling tingly walking down the street, singing the last words he sang as he left the stage.
He brought Igor out: this fantastic Russian accordion player with long blond hair to do a couple of numbers from “Heart on Snow”. And as soon as he brought him out I thought “fantastic, ‘cos that means he’s got to close with “As the Curtain Falls”, which is a number made famous by Bobby Darin, which you’ll found on “Stardom Road” and is heartwrenchingly beautiful. And the last line sings:
Your cheers and laughter will linger after
They've torn down these dusty walls
If I had this to do again
And the evening were new again
I would spend it with you again
But now the curtain falls.
