This reminds me of a recent to-do list I found in my bag, which started out with things like "Apply for jobs" and "Hand in dissertation" and ended with "Have pub lunch in Deptford" and "Invent May 30 cocktail."

Any special occasion for same, or just the joy of alcohol?

I came home late last night and walked into thoughtful drinking. My housemate (also a Robert) declared his drink the finest he had ever had and thusly called it Robert. I remembered that last time I was composing I wrote a five bar coda and thought it was a good name for a drink.

Did you invent a May 30 cocktail? Most of my to do lists start "Make a list" and end "eat something" and "sleep" which I do sometimes forget to do.

Sadly, no -- I spent a half-hour drafting various combinations of something to evoke the following:

- 16th-century English atheist espionage face-stabbing
- 15th-century French emigré royalty
- 20th-century American rock and roll with cars and blue jeans and really nice arms

and gave up around "pour stout into can of PBR and top with brandy and marguerites."

Possibly the Five-Bar Coda needs a fifth bar of something? Or should I assume you've experimented with that already?

Champagne and whisky on the rocks? Especially if you use an icepick.

It's kinda like the Famous Five having a dog. The ice is definitely the fifth ingredient, and it should be left to stand a minute before you start drinking it. If there was going to be another slug of something, it would be rose petal liqueur, which I'm out of stock of at the moment. It's bright pink and makes your teeth rot to look at it.

Hmm. I wonder whether homemade would be any good. Lychees tend to come up on special offer fairly regularly...
