Woke from a *very* bizarre dream last night by an alarm I didn't set. When I realised my alarm clock had spontaneously turned itself on, and rectified the problem, I couldn't get back to sleep because of a ticking noise. It was exactly the sound of an old wind up double-bell model alarm clock that hs been hidden under a pile of clothes because it ticks so loudly, which then ends up by the floor and resonates through the room. See also the Telltale Heart. So I stumble out of bed and track the ticking to a cardboard box filled with cables and tip it on to the floor. No ticking. No culprit either. Bugger.

Check for mice. A couple of times I've been awakened by what sounds like ticking, went over to check it at which point it stopped, and later found something very chewed in the same area.

I hate clocks like that. I've been known to wrap them up in old blankets and put them inside chests of drawers just to muffle the blasted ticking noise.
